France 2026 — you pay at the barrier, and the sticker has to be ordered in advance

There is no vignette in France. You pay for the section you actually drive, at a barrier, and that part is simple. The expensive thing is something else entirely — an environmental sticker you cannot buy on the way.

⚠️ Three collection systems, not one

Closed. You take a ticket on entry and pay on exit; the amount depends on distance and vehicle class. Most of the network works this way.

Open. No ticket: one barrier, one flat amount, regardless of how far you drove.

Flux libre — the one worth knowing about. No barriers at all: gantries over the road read the plate and there is nowhere to stop.

On flux libre you have 72 hours to pay. Without a badge you can pay online at the concession operator's payment space, or at one of the Nirio tobacconists (the operator ATMB counts 10,000) in cash or by card by giving your plate number. ATMB's page on how to pay flux libre, read 2 October 2026; it describes the scheme in general terms and ATMB's own flux libre section is due only in 2027. Check the operator of the road you drive. What happens if you miss the 72 hours, and any amounts, we do not print: we could not read an operator source for it.

Paying at the barrier

Cards, cash, fuel cards, a télépéage badge — check the signs above each lane, because lanes are separated by payment method and taking the wrong one means reversing against a queue.

We do not link an "official toll calculator". The concession operators publish either JavaScript applications or PDF tables, and we could not confirm an official calculator that works without JavaScript. Rather than point you at a private site and call it official, we say so.

Crit'Air — the trap you have to settle before you leave

This is the most important paragraph on this page.

France has low-emission mobility zones (ZFE-m). The sticker is not required everywhere in the country: it is required for driving and parking inside a ZFE-m, and for driving when a prefect activates differentiated traffic during a pollution episode. Since 1 January 2025 the rule also reaches agglomerations of more than 150,000 inhabitants that stay within the regulatory air-quality limits but exceed the World Health Organization's guide values. Ministry of Ecological Transition, page updated 2 February 2026, read 2 October 2026.

A foreign-registered car needs the sticker too. The official service has a separate ordering path for vehicles registered abroad.

And here is the problem: you cannot buy it at the border or at a filling station. You order it online and it comes by post, to the address on the registration document. The certificate itself costs 3.11 € plus postage; postage is higher for delivery outside France and is shown to you when you order. Same ministry page, read 2 October 2026.

Practically: order it well before you set off, not the week you leave.

The fine is 68 € for light vehicles — a third-class contravention — and 135 € for heavy goods vehicles. Same ministry page, read 2 October 2026.

There are six sticker classes: E, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. The oldest vehicles, under the least strict emission standards, get no sticker at all and are simply unclassified — which in a ZFE-m means they do not get in.

One more warning, and it comes from the ministry itself: search results are full of intermediaries with no connection to the administration selling the same sticker for more. The only correct address is the government service certificat-air.gouv.fr.

Mont Blanc and Fréjus — your badge does not work here

Both tunnels sit outside the motorway system and do not accept télépéage. The operator ATMB says so on its Mont Blanc page. That surprises anyone who has a badge and has got used to it working everywhere.

At Mont Blanc the return ticket is valid until the seventh day after it was issued: the return must be made by 23:59 on that seventh day. ATMB, car tariffs at the Mont Blanc tunnel, read 2 October 2026.

We do not print the accepted payment methods for either tunnel: we could not read a current operator page for them. Take a card and some cash and check the operator's page before you travel.

⚠️ The Mont Blanc operator announces night closures of the tunnel from Monday 5 to Thursday 8 October 2026, from 22:00 to 06:00 the next morning. A closure means a detour through Fréjus or over a pass. Check the operator's closure calendar before you travel.

Updated: 2 October 2026. The Crit'Air rules, the certificate fee and the fines were re-read at the Ministry of Ecological Transition on that date, the flux libre window and the tunnel facts at ATMB. The flux-libre escalation amounts and the tunnel payment methods are not printed because they could not be re-verified.
