Portugal 2026 — gantries with nowhere to stop, and what a foreign plate has to arrange first

Portugal has no vignette. It also, on part of its network, has nothing to pay at. There is no booth, no barrier and no cashier — only a gantry over the road that reads your plate while you drive under it at speed. You carry on, owing money, and nothing on the road tells you so.

That is the whole problem with driving here, and it is why the arranging has to happen before you get on the motorway.

Two systems, side by side

Traditional tolls work the way you expect: you stop, take a ticket where the system is closed, and pay at the exit in cash or by card. Some lanes at these plazas are reserved for electronic payment.

Electronic-only tolls are gantries. No booth, no stopping. A panel beside each gantry shows what the passage costs. The operator's own instruction for these roads is blunt: if you drive them with a foreign-registered vehicle, you must already have an activated means of payment.

We do not list which roads are electronic-only: the operator's official map shows them, but we could not read it as text. Check the operator's map before you choose a route, and assume that any motorway can be one.

What a foreign plate can set up

All four options below come from the state toll service run by Infraestruturas de Portugal, read on 2 October 2026.

EasyToll — you link a bank card (Mastercard, Visa or Maestro) to your registration plate, and every passage is debited from it. Subscription 1 €, plus an administrative cost of 0.32 € per trip. It is valid for 30 days from registration. You can subscribe online, or at one of the four EasyToll plazas. Keep the receipt or e-mail you get, and check that the plate printed on it is actually yours.

Tollcard — a prepaid card, activated by text message, with a face value of 5 €, 10 €, 20 € or 40 €. The balance is valid for one year from activation, and balances from several cards activated for the same plate add up. Sold at CTT and at motorway service areas.

Go Toll — a Via Verde subscription, 0.77 € charged only in the months you actually use it, plus the same 0.32 € per trip. Online only.

Go Toll & Beyond — 1.99 € a month, again only in the months you use it, with the windscreen device included and no per-trip administrative cost. Roaming into Spain and France is a further 1.99 € a month.

A foreign toll tag you already own may work: Portugal accepts devices issued in other countries under the EU interoperability directive. The operator's advice is to confirm with the company that issued your device before you drive, not after.

⚠️ One exclusion applies to EasyToll and Tollcard. They are valid on all national motorways except the crossings managed by Lusoponte — the 25 de Abril bridge and the Vasco da Gama bridge in Lisbon. Those two are settled separately.

Which is why: arrange the payment before you set off, and do not count on noticing something on the way.

⚠️ If you have already driven through with nothing set up

The operator's answer is procedural, not punitive: you settle the amount owed with the operator of the road you used, through the concession portals — Ascendi, Globalvia Portugal, Vialivre and Via Verde. You can look up your journeys on any of those portals whichever concession you drove on, and you will be redirected to the right one to pay.

We print no fine figure, and that is deliberate. The operator's service does not publish one.

One column that is not yours

The operator's page lists a post-payment route: pay afterwards at a CTT point, a Payshop agent or by ATM reference, available 48 hours after the passage and due within 15 working days, with an administrative cost of 0.32 € per journey up to 2.56 € per payment.

Read the table heading. That route sits under national registration plates. The foreign-vehicle table lists EasyToll, Tollcard, Go Toll, Via Verde and foreign interoperable devices — and not post-payment. If you are driving a foreign plate, that is the list that applies to you.

The address to be careful with

Updated: 2 October 2026. The payment methods for foreign-registered vehicles, their charges, the 30-day and one-year validities, the Lusoponte exclusion and the broken link were all re-measured at source on that date. The list of electronic-only roads and the 2025 abolition of the former SCUT tolls are no longer printed because they could not be re-verified.
